Our Aims
We have simple aims.
We want to provide children with the best possible Scouting experience giving them skills for life.
We are part of a worldwide movement forging stronger communities and inspiring positive futures.
We believe in Scouting values and encourage everyone to follow their dreams, look after their friends, do more and learn more .
We know that we do great things, helping young people reach their full potential by focusing on teamwork, leadership and resilience.
We work as part of the local community promoting inclusion to bring people together.
‘My volunteer leaders believed in me as a young person and taught me to believe in myself. They showed me I could do anything I put my mind to”, Dwayne Fields. Chief Scout.
Our Young People Succeed!
Children and young people aged 6 to 18 in our group achieve an enviable range of Chief Scout’s Awards and core Challenge Awards. These milestones focus on ambitious, themed tasks within a balanced programme, supplemented by activity badges earned through both group sessions and individual initiative. We foster this success by providing adventurous, interesting programmes that prioritise personal development.
As Chief Scout Dwayne Fields advocates, we believe the outdoors is a place for everyone to be at their best. We champion “learning by doing”—giving young people the responsibility to lead teams, take acceptable risks, and think for themselves. Through this, they develop vital life skills like resilience and tenacity, alongside employability skills such as problem-solving and leadership.
The results are proven. National research indicates that Scouts are:
32% more likely to be physically active than their peers.
17% more likely to demonstrate leadership and excel in teamwork.
33% more likely to actively support their local communities.
Barton St David Scout Group is part of the East Somerset District Council of the Scout Association.
Our History
Barton St David Scout Group was formed in 1994 by a few dedicated volunteers and about seven Cubs. Initially the group was part of the Baden Powell Traditional Scouting Movement but is now a member of the Scout Association.
Since 1994, literally hundreds of youngsters have enjoyed Scouting in Barton. Weekly sessions have been held in Barton St David Village Hall, which is ideally located next to a large playing field and close to fields and woods for more adventurous activities.
Barton Scouting has always aimed to provide something for everyone. There have been numerous local camps in Somerset and Dorset along with international camps. We have always taken a clear role in our local community, taking part in events such as Remembrance, carnivals, events and local projects.
We continue to build on our rich and successful past and increase our success in the future.

Brian Cilgrim was the founding member of our Group. A man who dedicated much of his life to Scouting, he was an inspirational figure to hundreds of children. He is also fondly remembered by a considerable number of adult leaders who he supported with advice, encouragement and praise. His legacy is immense in those who are now adults and leaders who continue to work within the Group.
